Official Launch of the Maiden Edition of the North Central Coordinator's Award
On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) and the Central Executive Council (CEC) of PSN-YPG, we are excited to announce the official launch of the Maiden Edition of the North Central Coordinator's Award.
The inaugural award was presented to Pharm. Ogezi David Otse on the 15th of November 2024, during the Induction/Oath-taking ceremony at the University of Jos, Nigeria.
This prestigious award, sponsored by the North Central Coordinator, Pharm. Obute A. Obute, recognizes outstanding contributions, innovations, and leadership by pharmacy students and young pharmacists through the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS). It marks the beginning of activities in the North Central zone and aims to celebrate excellence in leadership within the profession.
The award was presented by the Plateau State Coordinator, PSN-YPG, Pharm. Doumanan Christian, who represented the North Central Coordinator. Also present were the immediate past Plateau State Coordinator, Pharm. Pamdusu Polycarp, and Pharm. Wanche Ernest.
The North Central Coordinator's Award is designed to promote healthy competition, foster creativity, collaboration, and excellence among young pharmacists and pharmacy students. It sets the stage for future endeavours that will continue to strengthen the leadership capabilities of members within the PSN-YPG community.

COMMUNIQUÉ FROM THE PSN-YPG NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) MEETING
The PSN-YPG National Executive Council (NEC) comprising of the Central Executive Council (CEC), State Coordinators, and Past Chairmen, convened on 17th November 2024.
The meeting served as a medium for the CEC to engage with the NEC and deliberate on key matters concerning young pharmacists and the association, with a renewed focus on service and impact.
Following deliberations, the following resolutions were reached:
🔖Discontinuation of Zonal/Regional Conferences:
All Zonal Coordinators are directed to discontinue physical zonal/regional conferences. Instead, efforts should be channeled towards driving advocacy and strengthening state chapters within their respective regions.
🔖Policy document on Minimum Remuneration:
State Coordinators, in collaboration with Regional Coordinators, are to develop a comprehensive policy document on minimum remuneration for young pharmacists. This document must be finalized by 31st December 2024. Advocacy for its implementation will commence in January 2025.
🔖Introduction of State Dynamics at the Kano National Conference:
As part of the upcoming PSN-YPG National Conference in Kano, state chapters will present detailed reports on their activities, achievements, and innovative initiatives
🔖Reintroduction of State Performance Awards:
Awards will be reintroduced to recognize and reward states based on key performance indicators, including advocacy efforts, public health initiatives, membership growth, and active participation in group activities.
🔖Strengthened Support from the Central Executive Council:
The Central Executive Council, under the leadership of Pharm. Tekena George, will prioritize supporting state chapters and initiatives spearheaded by State Coordinators to enhance impact and cohesion.
🔖Virtual Town Hall Meeting:
A virtual Town Hall Meeting has been scheduled for 30th November 2024. This will facilitate engagement with young pharmacists across the country, providing updates on our administration’s ongoing initiatives and plans.

PSN-YPG Honours PharmaSymbiosis for Supporting Young Pharmacists
On 12th December 2024, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria - Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) paid an appreciation visit to PharmaSymbiosis in recognition of its exceptional support for the development of young pharmacists in Nigeria.
The delegation, led by the National Chairman of PSN-YPG, Pharm. Tekena George, was warmly received by the PharmaSymbiosis management team, which included Pharm. Nkechi Ukaiwe (Director of Operations), Adedayo Ogunpitan (Marketing Manager), and Joseph Olaosebikan Arowosola (Franchise Manager).

On December 12, 2024, the Central Executive Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria – Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) held a strategic Zoom meeting with Pharm. Olayinka Subair, the Country Director for Pfizer West African Region and Patron of PSN-YPG.
The session, chaired by PSN-YPG National Chairman Pharm. Tekena George, celebrated Pharm. Subair’s remarkable leadership at Pfizer, which continues to inspire young pharmacists across Nigeria.

Pharm. Hashidu Aminu Danjuma Wins Pharmanews Young Pharmacist of the Year Award 2024
Pharm. Hashidu Aminu Danjuma has emerged as the winner of the Pharmanews Young Pharmacist of the Year Award 2024. Following a competitive online poll that ended on December 11, 2024, at noon, Pharm. Hashidu secured an impressive 3,310 votes, surpassing the first runner-up, Pharm. Marvelene Bassey Ekott, who garnered 2,871 votes. Other contestants included Pharm. Valentine Izuchukwu Agbasiere and Pharm. Nsikan Uko Sunday, who polled 491 and 173 votes, respectively.
The management of Pharmanews Ltd expressed gratitude to all participants and voters, emphasizing the importance of the poll in showcasing the remarkable talents among young pharmacists. The Managing Director and Publisher of Pharmanews, Pharm. (Sir) Ifeanyi Atueyi, congratulated Pharm. PSN-YPG Participates in 16th Inauguration of ACPN Leadership

PSN-YPG Pays Advocacy Visit to Jawa Pharmaceuticals
On the 6th of December, Pharm. Tekena George, National Chairman of PSN-YPG, led a visit to Varkey Verghese (MFR), Founder and Managing Director of Jawa Pharmaceuticals, in Lagos.
The visit aimed to advocate for increased career opportunities for Young Pharmacists, particularly in the areas of Industrial and Regulatory Pharmacy. Discussions focused on expanding employment opportunities, enhancing the intake of Intern Pharmacists, and fostering partnerships to support the professional growth of young pharmacists within the pharmaceutical industry.
The team also toured Jawa Pharmaceuticals’ newly constructed state-of-the-art Beta-Lactam manufacturing plant—the largest of its kind in West Africa. Pharm. Mabel Ndulaka, a Regulatory Manager at Jawa Pharmaceuticals and a distinguished Young Pharmacist, guided the tour, offering insights into the company’s commitment to pharmaceutical innovation and quality manufacturing.

PSN-YPG Hosts Post-School Career Path Webinar for North Central Pharmacy Students
On December 7th, 2024, the Benue Pharmacy Students Association (BEPSA), in collaboration with the PSN-YPG North Central Office, organized an enlightening webinar titled "Post-School Career Path: Strategic Guidance and the Significance of Early Preparation." The event brought together over 100 participants from three institutions within the North Central region: the University of Jos, the University of Ilorin, and Bingham University.
Moderated by BEPSA Vice President Enuwa Abokpa, the session featured esteemed speakers who provided insightful guidance on navigating professional pathways post-graduation.

PSN-YPG Edo End of Year Activities
The Young Pharmacists Group (YPG), Edo State Chapter, successfully hosted its End-of-Year General Assembly & Jeans Party on Sunday, 22nd December 2024, at the Glitch Arcade Ground behind Filmhouse Cinema, Ugbowo. The event, which began at 4:00 PM, was a fantastic opportunity for YPG members to come together and celebrate the accomplishments of the year while enjoying an evening of fun and networking.
The event was well-attended, with members arriving in their best denim outfits. The first 20 attendees were treated to exclusive free gifts, setting a festive tone for the evening. Glitch Arcade offered a wide range of activities, including archery, paintball, football, tennis, and basketball, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed by participants. These activities created a lively and engaging atmosphere, allowing members to interact in a fun, competitive setting.
Drinks and refreshments were available throughout the event, ensuring everyone stayed refreshed while socializing and participating in the games. The relaxed environment provided an excellent opportunity for networking, allowing members to strengthen both personal and professional connections.
Overall, the YPG End-of-Year General Assembly & Jeans Party was a great success, bringing together the YPG community for a night of fun, reflection, and bonding. On January 14, 2025, the Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) embarked on a strategic advocacy visit to the Centenary President of PSN, Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim. Led by Pharm. Tekena George, the National Chairman of PSN-YPG, the delegation congratulated him on his well-deserved election and commended his commitment to advancing the interests of young pharmacists across Nigeria.

Key Advocacy Areas and Proposed Solutions
1. Enhancing Internship Placement Opportunities
One of the major hurdles faced by pharmacy graduates is securing internship placements. To address this, PSN-YPG proposed:
Establishing a Central Internship Placement Scheme in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health.
Restoring internship positions at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD).
Expanding the accreditation of community pharmacies through the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) to create additional internship opportunities.
2. Improving Access to the Pre-registration Examination for Pharmacists (PEP)
Recognizing the logistical and financial burden imposed by limited exam centers, PSN-YPG called for:
An expansion of PEP exam centers to include more tertiary institutions and pharmacy schools across Nigeria.
Engagement with the PCN to expedite solutions and ensure accessibility for all candidates.
3. Strengthening Entrepreneurship Support for Young Pharmacists
PSN-YPG emphasized the need for entrepreneurship-driven solutions, advocating for:
Access to financial support mechanisms tailored for young pharmacists.
Free Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration to encourage business start-ups within the pharmaceutical industry.
4. Increasing Young Pharmacists’ Representation in PSN Committees
PSN-YPG reiterated the importance of including young pharmacists in PSN’s decision-making processes. The group called for the immediate implementation of the resolution passed at the 2023 PSN AGM in Uyo, which mandates that at least 20% of PSN committee memberships should consist of young pharmacists.

PSN-YPG Engages Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) on Pressing Industry Challenges
Abuja, Nigeria – January 21, 2025
A delegation from the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria – Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG), led by its National Chairman, Pharm. Tekena George, met with the leadership of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) to discuss key challenges affecting young pharmacists and propose actionable solutions.
The delegation was received by the Chairman of the PCN Governing Council, Pharm. (Mrs.) Hajiya Wosilat O. Giwa, the Registrar, Pharm. Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed, and other senior officials at the PCN headquarters.
During the meeting, PSN-YPG highlighted several critical concerns, including:
Centralized Internship Placement: Advocacy for a standardized system to streamline internship placements and eliminate longstanding bottlenecks.
Expansion of Internship Centers: A call for the accreditation of additional community pharmacies and tertiary institutions to shorten the waiting period between internship and national service.
Increased PEP Exam Centers: A proposal to establish more centers for the Pharmacy Examination Programme (PEP) to reduce logistical and financial burdens on candidates.
Review of Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Orientation Fees: An appeal for a reassessment of fees to ease financial pressures on returning graduates.
Young Pharmacists in Regulatory Roles: A request for the engagement of young pharmacists as volunteers or employees to assist in regulatory enforcement, particularly in tackling the proliferation of unregistered pharmaceutical premises.
Creation of a PSN-YPG Desk Office: A recommendation to establish a dedicated office at the PCN headquarters to facilitate communication and streamline processes related to registration and regulatory examinations.
The PCN leadership acknowledged these concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing them. The council disclosed that efforts to establish a centralized internship placement system are already in progress, with strong support from the Ministry of Health.
“This initiative is actively being developed,” a PCN representative stated. “The Minister of Health has shown strong commitment to ensuring its implementation in the shortest possible time.”
The council also emphasized its ongoing collaboration with university vice-chancellors to accredit more internship centers. “We recognize the need to expand internship opportunities and are engaging with the necessary authorities to make this happen,” said PCN Chairman, Pharm. (Mrs.) Hajiya Wosilat O. Giwa.
Other commitments made by the council included plans to resume internships at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), explore volunteer opportunities for young pharmacists in regulatory enforcement, and expand PEP exam centers despite financial constraints.
“The PCN is committed to increasing the number of PEP exam centers,” said Pharm. Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed, PCN Registrar. “However, the financial implications are considerable, and we welcome any support to make this possible.”

PSN-YPG Strengthens Engagement in Kano State
The National Leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria – Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) recently embarked on a strategic engagement in Kano State, reaffirming its commitment to supporting young pharmacists and strengthening collaborations ahead of the 6th Annual National Conference set to hold in June 2025.
Key Engagements
1. Meeting with PSN Kano State Leadership
Led by the National Chairman, Pharm. Tekena George, alongside the National Vice Chairman, Pharm. Sani Rapha Tachio, and the North West Regional Coordinator, Pharm. Kabir Salihu, the team engaged with the Kano State YPG Leadership, headed by Pharm. Salma Adamu Dangwani. Discussions centered on empowering young pharmacists and ensuring active participation in the upcoming national conference.
2. Courtesy Visit to PSN Kano State Chairman
The PSN-YPG team also met with Pharm. (Dr.) Murtala Isa Umar, Chairman of PSN Kano, to express gratitude for his unwavering support. Pharm. Umar reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a successful conference, further strengthening the collaboration between PSN-YPG and the state leadership.
3. Breakfast Meeting with Pharm. Ahmed I. Yakasai
The team had a breakfast meeting with the Kachalla of Kano and Honorary Consul-General of Pakistan in Nigeria, Pharm. Ahmed I. Yakasai, mni, FPSN. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the profession, he graciously accepted to serve as the Royal Father of the Day at the forthcoming conference.
4. Engagement with Industry Leaders
The delegation also met with:
✅ Alh. Sayyidi Lawal Atana, MD/CEO of Latnas Pharmaceuticals, to discuss partnerships aimed at empowering young pharmacists.
✅ Pharm. Onimisi Siyaka, Chairman of the National Association of Industrial Pharmacists, Kano State Chapter, who expressed support for PSN-YPG initiatives.

PSN-YPG Leadership Engages Pharm. Kim Jerry Bot in Plateau State
On January 30, 2025, the National Leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria – Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) paid a courtesy visit to Pharm. Kim Jerry Bot, a founding leader of PSN-YPG and the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Drug and Medical Commodities Management Agency.
Led by National Chairman, Pharm. Tekena George, and National Vice Chairman, Pharm. Rapha Sani Tachio, the delegation commended Pharm. Kim Jerry Bot for his visionary leadership and the remarkable progress achieved under his watch, positioning the agency as a model institution for pharmacists in Plateau State.
The discussions focused on mentorship and capacity building for young pharmacists. In a strong show of support, Pharm. Kim pledged to mobilize Plateau Young Pharmacists for the upcoming National Conference in Kano 2025 and reaffirmed his commitment to guiding the next generation of leaders.

Young Pharmacist of the Month (January 2025): Pharm. Yusuf Hassan Wada
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria – Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) proudly celebrates Pharm. Yusuf Hassan Wada as the Young Pharmacist of the Month for January 2025.
Pharm. Wada is a Health Policy Officer, African Region, at the Society for Family Health (SFH) and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing pharmacy, research, and public health. As a former Northwest Coordinator of PSN-YPG, his leadership has significantly impacted young pharmacists across the region.
A four-time recipient of the SFH Scientific Publication and Thought Leadership Award (2021-2024), he has earned numerous accolades, including the 2024 IDGA Impact Award and the Lagos Business School Faculty Director’s Most Engaged YTP Participant Award (2023). His global engagements include speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and co-chairing the 3rd Annual Joint PAVE HIV Cure Conference in Baltimore, USA.
Pharm. Wada recently marked a personal milestone by authoring "Intentionality," a thought-provoking book launched during SFH’s 40th anniversary celebration. His message to young pharmacists is simple yet powerful:
"Stop looking at the big picture; it can seem impossible. Instead, aim to be one percent better than yesterday. Failures are how we find greatness—just keep pushing, learn from mistakes, and you will achieve your dreams."
